Hope

Dad had been having good results at this point with chemo on his pancreas, liver and lungs. Unfortunately, tests showed what his doctor believed to be tumors in his brain. There was nothing his doctor could do for the tumors and it would most likely alter his memory and personality. Mom and Dad needed to share that information with us before we went to the hospital to have Eli. I was so torn. A precious baby to celebrate but also news to grieve.

Eli was born on Monday, March 23, 2009. We were filled with joy but my heart was heavy as we prepared to face what was ahead.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 marked a miracle. Dad came to the hospital to hold Eli. I didn't think he would have the strength. While they were visiting, Mom blurted out the news before Dad had a chance to tell us. She was so excited. The doctors were wrong! Long story short...the tests were taken before a review panel and there were no brain tumors.

This picture reminds me of hope. We were given more time to be together. Cancer, in the end, took Dad to heaven but I stand witness to miracles, blessings and the power of prayer during our journey. I grieve when I see this picture because this is the last time he would hold one of my babies on earth but I celebrate because I know I will see and be held by him again.

"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."
I Thessalonians 4:13-14

Reflection

I never thought I would be one of those moms who turned teary at their baby's approaching first birthday. Well, there is a first time for everything.

I can still remember fondly the middle of the night feedings in the hospital. The window in my room looked out on the labor/delivery waiting room and the hallway of the postpartum wing. We snuggled together to watch the hustle and bustle of doctors and nurses and the families gathered together in celebration. As Eli nursed, a closeness, a strong connection formed between us. It was such a tender time. I was so thankful for such a different experience this time around.

On the eve of Eli's first birthday, I am amazed at how fast the time has flown. I barely recognize that little baby I first held almost a year ago.

Time to have a baby!

Nate, The Pip and I snuggled in bed together on our last night as a family of three. It was so hard believe that we would be a family of four soon.

Ready!
